Air Conditioning & Heating System Operating Tips:
- Avoid changing your filters to the new types that can overly restrict airflow. Although most “high-efficiency” filters claim to improve indoor air quality, they may block airflow, leading to system malfunction and damage.
- Avoid warming up your car in the garage because potentially deadly carbon monoxide from your vehicle’s exhaust can be pulled into your home. As a preventive measure, install one or more low-level carbon monoxide monitors in your home.
- Ensure your system functions properly and has adequate airflow by having your service technician measure its static pressure at least twice a year.
- Have your service contractor measure your furnace, boiler, and/or water heater’s combustion efficiency annually and adjust its burner’s performance. A properly operating burner delivers up to a third more heat than an unadjusted burner.
- Have your system checked at least twice a year. Just because it runs does not mean it works properly. If you suspect your system is malfunctioning, please do the following before calling us:
- Ensure the unit is plugged in, the shutoff switch and/or circuit breaker is turned on, and the thermostat is calling for heating or cooling.
- Check the panels to see if they are completely closed. Some indoor units have safety switches that will keep the unit turned off unless their access panels are closed.
- Ensure the gas valves of your gas appliances have not been turned off.
- Check the fuses or circuit breakers to see if they are working properly.
- Ensure the filter is not completely restricted or dirty.
- Ensure the belt on the blower has not broken or fallen off. Look for anything on your unit that may be broken or disconnected, but always remember to be careful around electricity, gas, or moving parts.
